Volunteers

Becoming a Volunteer with the 1882 Foundation is more than building skills — it’s your chance to make a real impact.

You’ll help keep the lessons of exclusion alive through storytelling and community, amplifying unheard voices and helping shape a more inclusive future.

What You Can Do

Volunteer roles can be:

  • Short-term – just a few hours at an event
  • Long-term – mentoring, advising, or helping on projects

No matter the role, your time supports our mission and helps bring stories to life.

How It Works

All volunteers fill out a simple application. We look at your skills, interests, and experience so we can find the best fit for you.

  • Keep in mind: not every applicant will be matched right away, but we’ll stay in touch for future opportunities.

Internships

Want to Make an Impact?

Becoming an Intern with the 1882 Foundation is more than building skills — it’s your chance to make a real impact. You’ll help keep the lessons of exclusion alive through storytelling and community, amplifying unheard voices and helping shape a more inclusive future.

What You’ll Do

Interns take part in projects that support our key initiatives—like Talk Story, education, heritage tours, and digital storytelling. You’ll gain hands-on experience in public history, communications, and community engagement while helping bring untold stories to life.

How It Works

Internships are offered year-round and can be in Washington, DC or Sacramento. We match your skills and interests to current projects and help you earn course credit when possible.

  • Most positions are 10 weeks long, about 20–25 hours per week.
  • Some roles may include remote work options.

Our Offices

The 1882 Foundation operates from two key locations — Washington, DC and Sacramento, CA — to connect communities and preserve Chinese American history nationwide.

DC Office
Our DC team focuses on creating K–12 educational resources, hosting Talk Story events, leading Chinatown heritage tours, and building partnerships that promote inclusive public history.

Sacramento Office
Our Sacramento team organizes heritage tours to historic Chinese American sites, develops educational materials, and plans future exhibits that share the stories of early Chinese laborers in California and beyond. The team also hosts quarterly Talk Story events to connect history with the community.

Both offices collaborate on Talk Story programs, storytelling workshops, and projects that strengthen and revitalize Chinatowns across the country.
