SUMMARY:Celebrate the Life of Corky Lee
DESCRIPTION:The 1882 Foundation\, Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA)\, and DC Public Library invite you to join us for a pre-premiere screening of film producer Curtis Chin’s short documentary “Dear Corky\,” on the “undisputed\, unofficial Asian American photographic laureate” Corky Lee. \nThe screening will be offered in person only at the newly renovated MLK Library auditorium. After the film\, the filmmakers will participate in an in-person panel discussion with leading photojournalists about Corky’s legacy as an AAPI artist with broad connections across communities. This discussion will be livestreamed to virtual attendees. \nMay 10th marks the anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Corky made annual visits to Promontory Point to photograph the descendants of Chinese workers excluded from the iconic “Champagne Photo\,” taken on May 10\, 1869\, upon the railroad’s completion. Our event\, on this date\, commemorates Corky’s legacy and his effort to preserve and celebrate the histories and stories of Chinese Americans. Friends and family gather to give thanks for a bountiful year\, reunite with loved ones who may have been apart\, and honor the moon\, a symbol of completion and harmony. \n1882 Foundation and OCA-DC\, in partnership with TAP-DC\, invite you to join us on Thursday\, September 23\, 2021\, at Chinatown Garden in the heart of D.C.’s Chinatown\, for an evening of food\, drinks\, and conversation. Though this year and last have been difficult for many in our communities\, we have\, together\, accomplished much. Come hang out\, socialize\, meet new folks\, and build the kind of community we need to advocate for ourselves and those we love. \nThis year’s Mid-Autumn Festival event will launch 1882 Foundation’s AAPI in DC Mixer series\, through which we hope to provide a welcoming space for dialogue and discussion about issues that matter to us and our communities – and to have fun together. Stay tuned for future events! \nFood and drink specials will be available\, as well as an assortment of complementary mooncakes (including vegan ones!). John Tinpe\, Chairman of the MOAPIA Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Community Development\, will share his experiences as a community activist. His restaurant\, Burma\, located in Chinatown\, served as a hub for local AAPI activists for many decades. \nDoors open at 6:30pm\, and Chairman Tinpe will speak at 7:00pm. A DJ will begin a set at 9pm\, and everyone is more than welcome to stay and enjoy. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and much appreciated\, and will go to 1882 Foundation and OCA-DC joint programs.

DESCRIPTION:WHEN & WHERE\n\nFeb 07\, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM\nZoom\n\n\nABOUT THIS EVENT\n\n\n\nJoin Nancy Yunhwa Rao\, professor at Rutgers University\, and Eric Hung\, Executive Director of Music of Asian America Research Center\, to explore Asian American composers of symphonic music since the 1950s. Referencing their own journeys and careers\, the presenters will reflect on how the immigrant experience has shaped the contributions of Asian American composers and their work. Featured pieces include Paul Chihara’s Forest Music (1969)\, Chen Yi’s Symphony No. 2 (1993)\, and Reena Esmail’s Black Iris (#metoo) (2018). This event is the third in our five-part virtual Discovery Series – Musical Mosaic: America’s Composers of Color. Guest speakers presented by Florence Bank. \n  \nMore about our guest speakers: \nEric Hung is Executive Director of the Music of Asian America Research Center (MAARC)\, and Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Maryland.  His research focuses on Asian American music\, music and trauma\, and public musicology.  He is also an active pianist and conductor who has performed in Germany\, Austria\, Hong Kong\, and Australia and throughout North America.  Prior to joining the nonprofit world full-time\, he was a tenured professor at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.  He is co-director of the Westminster Chinese Music Ensemble and a long-time member of New York–based Gamelan Dharma Swara.  Hung holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford University and an MLIS in Archives and Digital Curation from the University of Maryland. \n  \nNancy Yunhwa Rao is professor of music at Rutgers University. Her work bridges musicology\, music theory\, Chinese opera and Sinophone studies. She has published on the use of musical gestures\, singing\, and percussion patterns of Beijing opera in contemporary music by composers of Chinese origin.  Her study on composer Ruth Crawford Seeger won the best article award from the Society for American Music in 2009. Rao’s study of Chinese in North America has led to writings on transnational issues in the production and opera performance in Chinatown theaters. Her book\, Chinatown Opera Theater in North America\, includes analysis of networks\, playbills\, aria and spectacles. It has received three book awards\, from American Musicological Society\, Society for American Music\, and Association for Asian American Studies\, and Certificate of Merit from Association for Recorded Sound Collection.  In addition\, Rao has written about contemporary music by composers of Chinese heritage\, including Chen Yi\, Tan Dun\, Bright Sheng and Zhou Long.  A recent article “The Concept of Shi: Chinese Aesthetics and Chen Yi’s Happy Rain on a Spring Night\,” can be read in Music Theory Online.

DESCRIPTION:Accounts on Chinese immigration history during the Exclusion Era have placed great emphasis on the mainstream society’s hostility towards Chinese people. But\, how did the Chinese fight back? Where could we find the resilience of Chinese people? Can we still observe these imprints today? As an architectural historian and material culture scholar\, Hongyan Yang (Adjunct Professor and PhD candidate in Architecture\, UW-Milwaukee) found answers to these questions primarily in the artifactual evidence.
