DESCRIPTION:  \nStories of courage and resilience\, Chinese fleeing from Shanghai as the communist army engulfs the country becomes the backdrop for vivid narratives of four exiles who represent “the voices\, viewpoints and character of the Shanghai diaspora.” Join us for our February Talk Story event featuring the author and activist\, Helen Zia\, as she shares her newest book\, Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao’s Revolution. \nZia is author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People and many articles and essays on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women’s rights\, hate violence\, and homophobia. Her work on the 1980s Asian American landmark civil rights case of anti-Asian violence is featured in the Academy Award nominated documentary\, “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” and she is profiled in Bill Moyers’ PBS series\, “Becoming American: The Chinese Experience.” \nAs always\, these events are free and open to all. Talk Story Events are monthly Chinatown gatherings. The life of our community lies in the power of our stories remembered and shared. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: on the weekends\, we can only access the I Street Conferencing Center from the parking entrance. We will also move to a new venue and time.  From the Church where we have had our events\, go down the street opposite the 6th and I Synagogue to the I Street entrance of the I Street Conferencing Center within 600 Massachusetts Ave. NW.  We will open at 3:00 pm for a 3:30presentation.  This will be a great opportunity to meet one of the premier scholars on Chinese American mining and rural Chinatown histories in Nevada and California.\n\nChautauqua was a popular style of public presentations that combined entertainment and education\, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, often performed under a tent. We hope you can join us for a special wrap up at The Chinatown Garden Restaurant over a “Pioneer Meal\,” RR exhibit and annual review on Sunday\, December 17\, at 6:30 pm.Doors open at 5:30pm.\n\nWe are planning for our eighth season of monthly community Talk Story Events in Chinatown\, DC and organizing our sixth 1882 Symposium of museums and public educators of Chinese American history\, as well as expanding our teacher training and curriculum programs to Richmond and Norfolk in 2018 as well as nationally to Sacramento in the form.of our promotion of “Heritage Tours.”\n\nAll of this has been made possible by collaborations among stakeholders sharing a common goal to broaden public awareness of Chinese American history and heritage\, by short term grants for specific events\, and– most importantly–by the boundless devotion of our community volunteers and partners. In our seven active years\, we have never charged a participation or admission fee for any of our events and workshops. We have never held a fund raiser.\n\nWe like it that way\, but our programs are growing and\, as we plan for 2018\, we hope you can consider making a donation of any amount. History. Our film looks into the central theme of Echo & Resonance: 1968 explored by this year’s conference. The conference spans November 2-5 featuring displays\, panels and discussions\, but our film and others will be screened on Friday\, November 3\, at 6:15pm. 1882 Foundation Executive Director\, Ted Gong\, and resident film expert\, Jenny Cho\, will  be in attendance representing our film. \nEcho & Resonance: 1968 \nThe 2017 conference examines the 50th anniversary of the civil unrest of 1968. The conference sessions will explore 1968 and the civil unrest as a pivotal moment in the history of the District\, the history of activism in the area\, and the dynamics race\, politics\, governance\, and history played in the events.
