Director’s Discussion: Plague at the Golden Gate

June 21, 2022 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM UTC-5

More than 100 years before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world and set off a wave of fear and anti-Asian sentiment, an outbreak of bubonic plague in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1900 unleashed a similar furor.

Join the Chinese American Museum DC in collaboration with AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and the 1882 Foundation on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, from 6:00-7:00 pm ET to discuss the new AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film documentary, Plague at the Golden Gate and meet the film Director, Li-Shin Yu. Registration available for both in-person (limited seats) and online event (unlimited).

1882 Foundation Executive Director, Ted Gong, and United States Naval Academy professor, Audrey Clark, will join in conversation with Li-Shin Yu to discuss her new film and cyclical histories between 1900s USA and today. This examines the documented Chinese American experience at the turn of the 20th century and the modern rise of anti-Asian hate stemming from “who’s to blame” fear and rhetoric; China-virus, Kung-flu, yellow peril.

Registration is free! All registrants will receive a link to screen the full feature film documentary at your own convenience before the panel discussion.

We are excited to be able to open this event to a limited number of registrants to join the panelists in-person, live at the Chinese American Museum DC, and for unlimited online registration.

This program is made possible through the generous support of AARP Maryland.
