The 1882 Foundation seeks to broaden public awareness of the history and continuing significance of Chinese Exclusion in the U.S. by encouraging cross-sector collaboration, uncovering and preserving community stories, and promoting more inclusive histories in public education.
Here's how you can get involved.
Internship Program
The 1882 Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for the next generation of leaders, researchers, and community activists to grow their career. We provide several internship positions at both of our locations, in Washington DC and Sacramento, for college students and recent graduates to take part in.
Our interns gain valuable hands-on experience of what it is like to work at a small nonprofit. From local field trips, to discussions with community partners, and meaningful resume additions, our interns are always ready to use their experiences from 1882 in the next phases of their lives.
We have a variety of projects to work on. Interns will often work on programming, communications, and other day to day operations. However, if there is a specific project you would like to work on, please include a description of the type of project in your cover letter.
We accept interns in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, with Summer being our primary intern cohort.
Internship Requirements and Qualifications
Our internships are typically 10 weeks, with a weekly hourly commitment of 20 to 25 hours. During the summer, our interns are expected to come into the office at least three days a week, but during the school year adjustments can be made due to class schedules. Some weekend and evening availability is strongly encouraged to assist with events or other meetings.
Positions offered:
- Talk Story Track – focuses on programming and outreach projects
- Podcast Track – emphasis on editing, producing, and podcast promotion
- Communications Track – focus on social media, email communications, and graphic design
- Education Track – offered on a case by case basis
Our ideal candidate will:
- Have a major or minor in Asian American Studies, or conducted some research in this area of study
- History and Communication majors are also preferred
- Be curious and flexible
- Have strong writing and communication skills
- Have a proactive approach to work
Since the 1882 Foundation is a primarily volunteer-run nonprofit, we cannot offer monetary compensation at this time. This position is unpaid, but we encourage students to seek funding through their university or third parties. The 1882 Foundation is also dedicated to helping interns secure course credit through their university.
