China has hundreds of dialects, although most people only know about Mandarin or Cantonese. However, many of these dialects are disappearing — a trend happening all over the world as globalization increases. With new technology like AI, this presents new challenges for preserving dialects.

Our presenter, Leyi Lin Xu, is an independent filmmaker focused on capturing stories of rural life in China. This conversation is inspired by her documentary, Before Disappearing, which records the unique dialects of her hometown.
