The 1882 Foundation completed its fourth presentation for the Kennedy Center Cultural caucus on the evening of August 28, 2024 by hosting a program dedicated to the history of the concept of Talk Story, as originated in Hawaii. It was held at the KC’s REACH Skylight Pavilion. This concept is the staple and signature program of our outreach to our community.  Executive Director Ted Gong moderated the program that featured noted Hawaiian historian Stephen Sumida with his narrative of the birth of Talk Story and famed poet Wing Tek Lum who read a number of his poems of stories of the Hawaiian people.  The program was greatly appreciated by the audience of close to 100 attendees
The event also included participation from several authors/writers and groups who support story telling through literature.  Among this group were Russell Low, Audrey Clark, Constance Hays Matsumoto, Kent Matsumoto, the DC Public Library, JACL, and of course, staff from the 1882 Foundation.  They sold books, gave out treats, including shaved ice, and interacted with the crowds.  We look forward to future collaborations with them.
